The Cut Life: @tokyostylez Dishes On Kendall & Kylie Jenner’s 2016 Met Gala Hair!
Kylie Jenner loves to switch it up and though the youngest of Kris’ kids has been rocking long hair recently, for her first ever Met Gala appearance, she showed up with a bob paired with her Balmain. I had the chance to get the exclusive on Kylie’s latest look with the man behind her look, @tokyostylez. Check out what he had to say about working with Kylie AND Kendall below!
THE CUT LIFE: THIS WAS KYLIE’S FIRST TIME ATTENDING THE MET GALA. WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND HER HAIR FOR THE NIGHT?
Tokyo: The inspiration for Kylie’s look was clean with sleek hair. Since it was her first MET she didn’t want a hair out of place. So I placed it on her and we cut a long unit into the short sleek bob you saw on the carpet.
THE CUT LIFE: WAS THIS YOUR VISION, SOMETHING KYLIE WANTED, OR A COLLABORATIVE EFFORT?
Tokyo: It was collaborative effort for sure. We went through some of her favorite looks from the past and the whole team agreed this was one of our favorites. We did the whole look up to the minute before she had to get in the car for her walk.
THE CUT LIFE: WAS THIS YOUR FIRST TIME WORKING WITH SOMEONE FOR THE MET GALA? IF SO, WHAT WAS THAT EXPERIENCE LIKE FOR YOU?
Tokyo: This was my first MET so it was super special as me and Kylie shared this moment together. She isn’t just a client but a friend so we were both proud of each other for this huge moment. I feel like the MET is not just for the celebrity but gives your glam team a time to shine and I’m grateful for Kendall and Kylie for their trust in me. it’s been a crazy fun ride.
THE CUT LIFE: YOU ALSO DID KENDALL’S HAIR FOR THE MET AND SATURDAY’S WHITE HOUSE CORRESPONDENTS DINNER; WHAT’S IT LIKE WORKING WITH HER?
Tokyo: Again Kendall is another friend she makes it seem as if it’s not work. Kendall is great, and she is so beautiful so my job is easy because I don’t have to work to hard because she can virtually rock anything. The White House Correspondents Dinner was very fun because I live in DC part-time so I got to go back home, and we created a look she always loved with a high messy ponytail with pieces falling in the front. She killed in her dress and make up by Ariel. The MET was a little more tricky as I had to travel from one end of New York to the other to get both girls done but both were understanding and made it an easy experience. Kendall tried different things but with the dress we realized it was best to go simple slick back ponytail to give the Versace dress justice.
THE CUT LIFE: YOU’VE WORKED WTH THE JENNER SISTERS BEFORE FOR VARIOUS PRESS APPEARANCES; WHAT WAS IT LIKE WORKING WITH THEM ON ONE OF FASHION’S BIGGEST NIGHTS AND WORKING WITH THIS YEAR’S THEME?
Tokyo: Yes, we have been around the world together but the MET had a different feel of urgency. I looked at it as work like usual, but then family and friends hyped it up as one of the biggest media events in the world so naturally I got a lil’ nervous. But, I’ve been through major events before with other clients so I calmed down and got back to me so I could perform at the high level I always do. I’m actually pretty cool under pressure.
THE CUT LIFE: IN ADDITION TO YOUR CLIENTS – WHO BOTH LOOKED AMAZING – WHAT WERE SOME OF YOUR MOST MEMORABLE HAIR MOMENTS OF THE NIGHT?
Tokyo: Well, I loved Katy Perry and her boldness with the honey comb black hair with blunt bangs. Also, shout out to my friend Cesar Ramirez for his work on Ciara, Jennifer Hudson, Lala Anthony, and of course our friend Kim Kardashian.
THE CUT LIFE: IS KYLIE GOING TO KEEP THE BOB & ROCK WITH THE CUT LIFE FOR A LITTLE LONGER?
Tokyo: We will just have to see. She loves the element of surprise so stay tuned!
